SUSTAINABILITY

HANRO products are “Made in Europe” - 80% of the fabrics are produced in our own textile production facility Arula in Vorarlberg, Austria and HANRO also sources additional materials, like lace, from local Austrian suppliers.

Arula is the leading specialist for knitted fabrics made of natural fiber and synthetic cellulosic fiber, and guarantees sustainable production in Austria. In order to maintain environmentally-friendly standards, the machinery is constantly upgraded and modernized. Since 2001, for example, water consumption in production has been reduced by more than 50% per kilo of fabric produced. Our textile production facility Arula is OEKO-TEX® STeP certified. Our production site in Vorarlberg/Austria is certified in compliance with the most recent G.O.T.S. (Global Organic Textile Standard) sustainability standards.

Our demands on quality and excellence extend to our production sites. No expense is spared in meeting these demands, which includes HANRO manufacturing and finishing our own fabrics. Thanks to our state-of-the-art production processes, the fabrics we create are unique. Seamless and hem-less finishes, soft mercerization, and the very closest stitching requirements are just a few of our innovations, all of which we are constantly working on developing further. All HANRO ranges are certified in accordance with Öko-Tex standard 100 and bear the “Textiles Vertrauen” seal of approval.

All our products are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. All parts of our article meet the required criteria – the outer fabric, the sewing threads, inserts, prints, etc., as well as non-textile accessories, such as buttons, zip fasteners, rivets, etc. We choose new suppliers on the basis of balanced economical, ecological, and social criteria.

RESPONSIBLE HANDLING OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES

SHORT TRANSPORT ROUTES

Due to the textile production in Vorarlberg, Austria as well as the sewing shop in Portugal and the warehouse in Hungary, the transport routes are short and the CO2 balance is low. In 1989, HANRO restructured the transport route and switched from truck to train. This has already saved 4 million kilometers of truck driving distance.

WASTE REDUCTION

The employees are trained in terms of more environmental and cost awareness and better waste separation. Whenever possible, waste is separated to reduce the amount of residual waste. All fabric waste is recycled. Purchasing influences all suppliers in terms of packaging reduction.

NATURAL POWER

1984: Switched from heating oil to natural gas (avoiding 11.4 barrels of sulfur production per year) 2012: Installation of a roof-top photovoltaic system, which carries more than 9% of the self-sufficiency.

SOCIAL COMMITMENT

Employee development, work-life balance and civic engagement characterize the HANRO culture.
